Contempt Order
A contempt order is a legal ruling issued by a court when a person violates a court order. In the context of Family Law, a contempt order may be issued if a party fails to comply with a court order related to child support, a parenting plan, or spousal maintenance. A party’s failure to follow a court order to the letter does not necessarily mean that contempt is an appropriate action. When a court evaluates whether to find a party in contempt, it looks at three main factors: whether an order was actually violated, if the order was violated intentionally, and if an intentional violation of the order was in bad faith.
